What to Do With Your New Used Car

Oct 6th, 2011 Tom Aldridge

You have seen a used car that you like, taken a look at it, and decided to make a snap purchase. While this is not the most ideal way to choose a car, it is a move that many will make each and every year. But now that you have the used car, what are you going to need to do to it to make sure that it is taken care of?

While there are plenty of different things that you may want to do with your vehicle, these are the first few things that you must do with your new used car. These steps will help your car to operate more efficiently and effectively in terms of both gas mileage and drivability.

Complete Checkup

The first thing that you are going to want to have done to your new used car is a complete checkup. You want to make sure that you catch any of the different problems that you may have with your car. Simply take your vehicle to an automotive repair mechanic, preferably one that is ASE certified. They will take a look at every aspect of your car, finding any potential issues that you may find with the vehicle. While it is suggested that you do this before you purchase a car, some decide to wait until after the purchase to take this step on.

Change Filters, Fluids, and Possibly Tires

Unless you have been shown proof that everything in the used car has been changed within the last month of ownership, you are going to want to replace many of these various small things. You will want to replace the old filters with new filters to ensure that you are getting strong gas mileage. You are also going to want to change the fluids and oil in the car to ensure that it is in proper running condition. Some will choose to change the tires on their new used car after seeing the poor condition of the tires.

Computer Tests

If possible, ask to have computer diagnostics and tests run on your vehicle. While you may not be worried about emissions testing, you are going to want to check and see if everything in your vehicle is running as it should. The more tests that can be completed, the more sure you can be about the health of your vehicle.

While it is not a good idea to pick up a used car without taking it through an inspection first, there are options for those who decided to skip this step. Taking the vehicle to an ASE master technician, running computer diagnostics, and completing a battery of tests will help you to fully understand what issues you face with your car. From that point, you simply need to follow the rest of these various steps. When you are done, your car will be in the best working order that it can be in.
